Extrawelt – Fear of an extra planet
Extrawelt – Fear of an extra planet
With this review I purposely didn’t read any of the press release from Cocoon Recordings until after it was finished, as I wished to be objective about the album, sometimes when reading the press i find myself getting influenced by people’s words & on this occasion I didn’t want to be.
I have thought since hearing their work in the early days on James Holden’s Border Community Label that Extrawelt may be in a realm very few electronic music producers enter into. So my hopes for this album were rather high to begin with.
From the moment the first note hits in Superposition I feel like I’m transported to another aural dimension, some place where my ears want to absorb every frequency and where you can feel that sound is paramount to these sonic alchemists, from the technical production angle, this is the Sword thats been wielded to devastating effect, cutting through & distorting frequencies in all of the right ways.
All of the trademark Extrawelt atmospheric sounds are present the whole way through the album.
Track 2 “Gott lst Schrott” kicks off with a funky breaks type loop which gets me thinking about The artwork “is it as cool as this album sounds?” After checking it out, the simple answer is a resound yes, it’s subtle, yet complex, the contrast between light and dark correlates through the artwork all the way to Track 10.
There are so many great moments on this album. The synthesised playing/programming in “Das grosse flimmern” is exceptional, the rattling delayed percussion work at the start of “Silly Idol” illuded to a track that I thought was going to be more experimental.
“Punch that dragon” is one of those titles that made me smile, other excellent productions with equally enjoyable names “oddification” and “gentle venom” are one of the reasons I listened to this album 4 time in the space of 48hours.
Not quite sure yet which track will end up being my favourite, could be the funky tech floor filler that is “The Friendly Coroner ” or Superposition will possibly end up being my personal favourites, with an album as good as this only time will tell.
