Artist Of The Week – Matador

Artist Of The Week – Matador

Matador is a revolutionary live artist with a shining reputation for versatility, whilst never compromising on quality. Accolades have been showered on the Dublin-born producer, from proud ambassador of the NEVE 5088 Console, and Richie Hawtin’s PLAYDifferently MODEL1 mixer, his tenure as an ENTER resident at their worldwide events, to his consistent spot in RA’s Live Artist poll, bringing him rapid worldwide acclaim and a devoted worldwide fan base of clubbers and peers alike. Still thirsty for new worlds to conquer, Matador, aka Gavin Lynch, took on a new role as label boss for his RUKUS imprint in 2016. Since then, the label has signed some of the hottest techno names, including ANNA, Eats Everything, Patrick Topping and Carlo Ruetz.

Now, Matador makes his return to his own imprint with the incredible ‘Air’ EP.  The months between his releases have been studded with accolades for the Dublin-born and based artist, from his recent remix of Eats Everything’s ‘Burn’ to his incredible live shows at Ultra Miami and Caprices Festival; and he shows no sign of stopping, offering us a five track summer knockout.

The opening track, ‘Itajai’, is laden with tribal grooves and a raspy, mid range float, and showered with modular plucks.  In ‘Moonman’, strings subtly build and fall alongside panned, rhythmic arpeggiators.  Soft vocal hits hover majestically over a tube-driven bass line; creating a warm, punchy soundscape. ‘Surrender’s’ live, acoustic drum fills, and gliding synth lines are a call to attention.  With airtight sequences and mischievous flourishes, the Irish producer deftly navigates peak time techno in smooth, sophisticated style.  The undeniable sound of the Oberheim leads the attack in ‘Shamen’.  Evocative and emotionally charged; jazzy piano stabs punctuate a soulful, blissfully mesmerising vocal. ‘Air’ closes out the ep in captivating, ethereal fashion.  Glorious Model55 twinkles and warm pads, grounded by a muzzled bass, epitomize the season and all it stands for.  This latest musical offering is perhaps his best yet, wonderfully inspiring, thought provoking and invigorating.

Matador’s breathtaking explosive live shows continue to result in packed crowds and an equally packed touring schedule, including key bookings at top clubs and festivals such as Awakenings, Tomorrowland, Drumcode, and Output, DC-10, Space Ibiza, Stereo Montreal. This makes him a clear choice for our Artist of the Week!

Here are 4 of our favourite Matador moment’s, the first track is taken from his ‘Air’ EP which drops on his RUKUS label Today.
