Socket Hog – Purple Dragon – Bakroom – Recommended Album

Currently sitting at no.25 in Beatport’s electronica TOP 100 Releases chart and also at 81, 45 & 63 in the techno, tech house and melodic house and techno charts, Socket Hog’s – Purple Dragon album is a blend of techno, tech house & what Beatport considers melodic house and techno.

Straight off the back of a string of successful releases on Repressure, Rough Cut & now Bakroom. Socket Hog returns with a ten-track album “Purple Dragon” that took 2 years and 3 collaborations to complete. Some of the highlights on the album include “Dats Bass Music” with regular collaborator and studio guru Jamez of Touche /Rough Cut Records.

“The Drums” is another track that captures a marching hypnotic almost samba type groove, drenched with analog synths washed over a sinewave style bass, a tech-tribal type groove and slow ever evolving pads that add wondrous texture and fill the track out to perfection.

The title track off the album “Purple Dragon” is a stripped down Chicago/Detroit house inspired cut, harking to the sound of some of Socket Hog’s favorite deep house labels like Metroplex, Plastic City and I records. Other highlights include “Camarada”, a collaboration with OUD!N13 aka Nicolas Gaugain of French production duo G-Prod. Smooth melodic tones, some occasional white noise, tough drum programming, and precisely programmed synths intricately weave through complex chord progressions, building to a wondrous breakdown, before subtly rebuilding all elements.

Socket Hog

The Dublin born artist embarked on a creative adventure 3 years ago with this project & from its inception its turned out to be a succesful collection of eclectic dub type cuts and after hours grooves.  Socket Hog has connected with techno, progressive and deep house fans alike. In anticipation for whats to come next and unwilling to follow the norms relentlessly pushing his own skill set, Socket Hog demonstrates a unique approach to electronic music building sonic sculptures and providing a rich aural tapestry with a deeply resonant production style. There are some heavy nods to various different genres of music from the 70s, 80s and 90s like Kraftwerk (German band formed in Düsseldorf in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. Widely considered to be innovators and pioneers of electronic music,) new wave artists; Wang Chung, Malcolm Mclaren and Trevor Horn.

This record is subtle, nuanced and evocative, but also loud, deep and sophisticated. ‘Purple Dragon’ is an album that proves itself to be a rewarding creative challenge. An album that takes you to a place you didn’t know existed, and shows you that in fact you may have been there before.
